Halfpenny Miscellany is a Chicago-based chainstitch embroidery studio specializing in vintage-inspired custom embroidery with a modern western twist.

Using a rare hand-cranked chainstitch machine — a process completely different from modern sewing or computerized embroidery — Halfpenny Miscellany creates one-of-a-kind embroidery on jackets, shirts, denim, hats, bandanas, tote bags, banners, and pennants.

Chainstitch embroidery rose to prominence in the 1950s–70s through legendary tailor Nudie Cohn, known for crafting iconic stagewear for artists and entertainers including Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Gram Parsons, Buck Owens, Cher, John Wayne, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Glen Campbell, Webb Pierce, Dwight Yoakam, and Johnny Cash.

Today, Halfpenny Miscellany brings that tradition into contemporary spaces, creating custom embroidery for individuals, brands, and events seeking timeless craftsmanship with personality and character.

In addition to custom commissions, Halfpenny Miscellany specializes in live on-site chainstitching for:

  • Corporate activations

  • Retail and in-store events

  • Weddings and private parties

  • Markets, festivals, and pop-ups

Guests can watch designs stitched in real time and leave with personalized wearable keepsakes created on the spot.
